| Tommy's
is dedicated to funding research into, and providing information on, the
causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. Tommy's aims to see
the number of baby deaths reduced by a half by 2030. We cannot achieve this
aim without the dedication of research doctors, midwives and scientists
who are busy discovering how to protect mothers and babies at risk.
Every year in the UK, one in five pregnancies will end in a miscarriage and one in every two hundred babies will be stillborn. Furthermore, about one hundred and thirty babies are born too soon every day in the UK, and this prematurity is the largest single cause of baby death. Little is known about what causes these problems. As the UK's leading baby charity, we want to know why problems occur in some pregnancies, why some people are more at risk than others, if we can detect those more at risk, and how we can prevent these problems from occurring. Our research projects aim to find answers to some of these big unknowns. Each project, associated with Tommy's is reviewed by our external advisors to ensure that the charity only supports first class research which is relevant to our aims. Our research is funded by a variety of means: individual donations, company support, local fundraising, national lottery, and donations from the Pioneers Club. The Pioneers Club is a club set up by Tommy's to help fund our pioneering research. Members of this club make a regular donation and provide us with a reliable source of income, enabling us to fund and plan new research into premature birth, miscarriage, and stillbirth.
