We all know that running a marathon takes many months of hard training. However, Tommy's has produced some handy tips and schedules whatever your level of fitness and experience. These tips will help all our runners build up towards the marathon. These tips have been endorsed by Mark Steinle.

Two-time British marathon champion Mark Steinle has been the nation's top finisher in the London Marathon in three of the last five years, clocking 2.09.17 in 2002 to become the eighth fastest British marathon runner of all time. He represented Great Britain at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and in two World half-marathon championships.

Mark Steinle"I'm delighted to be supporting Tommy's and believe strongly in its mission. I hope these schedules and tips will be of some use to all the Tommy's runners. The very best of luck - both in collecting sponsorship and for the race itself."

Hello everyone - glad to see that there's lots of us in the same boat with our first marathon - I'm having problems with my eating at the moment..as i work strange hours, I find I'm either really hungry when I'm due to run, or really full.. any handy hints for pre-run snacks??!? And if there's anyone based in west london who fancys it, there's a group of us doing the marathon who've started a Saturday am run round Richmond Park - 7.2 miles, so quite a good work out.

Amanda, I find that about 1 hour before I am due to do a long run I eat an energy bar ( go bar ). This helps me get through the run, I find they can be digested easily so don't lie heavy. Then afterwards I eat a recovery bar ( high 5 ) to restore what I have used. Of course a banana will do just as well. Also don't forget bagels are a good pre-run food. I'm afraid I won't be able to run with you in Richmond as I live in the Bedfordshire area. Hope this helps.

Hey Amanda

Lots of little tricks to the food problem. The energy bar is good, bagel too. Also peanut butter on rice cake as well as energy drinks. Runnersworld.co.uk has loads of answers and tips. Good luck, hope the training is going well.

I will be running the marathon for the 2nd time this year but the first time for Tommy's. I live in Balham South London and wondered if there was anyone interested in doing some longer training runs. I am aiming for 3.5 hours on the day and would like to be "pushed" a bit for some 10 milers. Let Diana know and good luck to you all.

Does any one have a "workable" motivational tips? Have got to the stage of training where I'm finding it difficult to raise any enthusiasm for running (and I usually LOVE running - but only for 6 or so miles). The thought of running 18 miles this weekend followed by 20 next is just too grim. I need help! Thanks!

Best wishes to everyone - last one to the bar gets the round in!
